Town Back on Track

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 10/10/2012

GRIMSBY bounced back from their defeat to Dartford on Saturday with an impressive 2-0 win at Alfreton last night, which ended a six match unbeaten run of the Reds. With other results going Town's way it puts Town right back on the heels of the teams currently in the promotion places.

The goal scoring heroes for Town were loanees Neilson and Hannah. However Grimsby had to defend for long periods and had McKeown to thank on several occasions for keeping their lead intact at 1-0. Almost 50% of the crowd comprised away supporters, with 572 Mariners' fans making the trip to Derbyshire to cheer on their team.

The only change from the side which lost to Dartford was that Elding started for the Mariners, with Cook on the bench.

After a nervy opening Town gradually got in their stride and Neilson had Town's first chance of note.

Alfreton almost scored an own goal when a terrible backpass by Meadows almost beat his own 'keeper. From the ensuing corner Alfreton broke and McKeown made a great save at the feet of Arnold.

On 39 minutes Town broke the deadlock when Colbeck broke and pulled the ball back to Neilson who curled it into the corner, a great finish.

Just before half time Elding was booked for raising his elbow, but it could have been red.

Grimsby ended the first half deservedly winning 1-0.

However Alfreton soon regained the initiative in the second half and Pearson had to make a goalline clearance.

The pressure continued and McKeown had to make a brilliant save to deny Clayton.

Town wrapped up the points with a goal against the run of play with five minutes to go. Disley set up Hannah who finished superbly, shooting past Stewart.

Alfreton Town: Stewart, Law, Killock, Kempson, Franklin, Meadows, Streete, Bradley, Tomlinson, Anthony Wilson, Arnold

Subs: Taylor, Clayton, Franks, Russell, Worsfold

Grimsby: McKeown, Wood, Shaun Pearson, Pond, Thomas, Colbeck, Disley, Niven, Neilson, Hannah, Elding

Subs: Hatton, Miller, Artus, Cook, Southwell
