Nowhere to Hyde

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 07/11/2012

GRIMSBY'S proud unbeaten away record came to an end last night at Hyde United. Trailing 2-0 after conceding two early goals the Mariners pulled the game back to 2-2 and looked to go on and win in. However Hyde scored the fifth goal of the game, which proved to be decisive.

The managers made two changes from the side which won at Tamworth. Shaun Pearson replaced Ian Miller in the back four and Saturday's hero Andy Cook got the nod up front over Anthony Elding.

A mistake by McKeown led to the first goal after just 4 minutes. Crowther sent a cross into the box and McKeown came out to collect it, but failed to hold onto the ball and it bundled into the net off Brown's head.

Another defence mistake led to the second goal. Wood dithered on the ball and Crowther intercepted it and made no mistake in front of goal.

Derek Niven was substituted for Andi Thanoj after 30 minutes, and the change helped Town get back into a game they were deservedly losing 2-0. Just before half time Hannah raced on to a long ball and tried to go round the 'keeper. Frith in goal managed to get something on the ball and sent Hannah wide. However the Town striker managed to slot it in from an "impossible" angle.

Town were much the better side after the break and they soon equalised. The equaliser came from a set piece. Pond rose above the defence at a corner back and nodded the ball down to Hannah, who slotted the ball in at the far post.

At that stage Town looked the better side and you'd have expected them to go on and win it. However Hyde took a shock lead again when a deflected shot by Brown beat McKeown.

Grimsby failed to equalise again and will have to lick their wounds and try put another unbeaten run together.

Town's next challenge is against another newcomer to the division, Woking, who are the visitors to Blundell Park on Saturday. The Surrey side are very unpredictable. They have had some brilliant results, such as winning at Newport, but a lot of poor ones and currently find themselves perched in the packed lower middle part of the table. Both sides lost their top scorers from last season at the start of this campaign. Grimsby of course lost Liam Hearn and Woking lost Guisepe Sole, who will miss the whole campaign.
