Telford Bridge Gap Between Top and Bottom

TOWN endured a frustrating afternoon at Telford, a match they were expected to win against the division's bottom side. Grimsby totally dominated the first 35 minutes and missed a hatful of chances. Then Telford then took the lead against the run of play with a long range shot with their first meaningful chance.

Town drew level early in the second half when Mackreth headed in a Pittman cross. However the expected strong finish failed to materialise and Town had to settle for a point, which was enough to keep them in second place for a couple more days at least.

Paul Hurst named an unchanged team and formation which meant that supporters got to see two strikers start the game, as many fans had been crying out for. It looked to have been the right decision as Town were rampant from the kick off.

The two Town strikers combined well after 8 minutes and John-Lewis forced a good save from Hall. On 15 minutes Pittman missed a glorious chance when he tried to loft it over the 'keeper in a one-on-one.

Telford scored totally against the run of play 10 minutes before half time when a long range shot from Parry swerved in the air past McKeown. Telford went in 1-0 at the break in a half which Town should have been out of sight of after the first 20 minutes.

Hurst then brought on Neilson for Mackreth and Hannah for Pittman but the substitutions didn't really work and Town couldn't recapture the form of the first quarter of the game. Pearson though still should have won it when he missed with a free header from a corner right at the death.

Town gained a point but in it was two points lost as the Mariners were odds on to win this game. With everyone else playing but Grimsby on Tuesday night Town will be hoping to still be in the top three when the dark cloud of the FA Trophy makes its first appearance in the calendar at the weekend.
