Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Town Sweep to Victory

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 15/08/2015

GRIMSBY swept to the week's second successive victory against one of the league's newcomers, this time beating Bromley by the same 4-1 scoreline that saw Barrow defeated on Tuesday night. Padraig Amond set the tone scoring in the opening minutes, and Town were 3-0 up with a quarter of the game gone.

Bromley pulled a goal back just before half time but Town ensured the three points were their's when Craig Clay added a fourth in the 89th minute.

Paul Hurst picked the same team that beat Barrow in midweek, which meant Pearson and Mackreth had to start on the bench again. It was a decision that immediately paid dividends as Town were rampant from the start and destroyed Bromley's game plan with virtually their first attack. Arnold in acres of space fed Amond for yet another one-on-one with the keeper and he cooly slid the ball past Julian to give Town the lead.

Two minute's later Bogle was hacked down in the box as he tried to take the ball round Holland, and Bogle himself stepped up and put the Mariners 2-0 up.

Town continued to carve out chances and the third goal came from a corner. Arnold's spot kick was headed back across the goal by Gowling and Amond headed into the roof of the net from close range.

Town conceded a goal out of the blue just before half time when a diagonal cross into the box was headed in by Davis, not dissimilar to the goal Town conceded at Kidderminster.

After the break Bromley came into the game more and Town became more content to defend their lead, although the Mariners still manage to create more chances than the visitors.

The killer blow finally came when Bromley had to commit players forward and Town broke with the ball at feet of Mackreth and men either side of him. Mackreth unselfishly passed the ball to Clay who finished at the Pontoon end to secure the points for Town.

It was another impressive first half display in particular and Town created enough chances to win the game in that spell and scored three of them. Conceding another soft goal was slightly worrying but the Mariners look like they have the firepower to score a lot of goals this season. Grimsby have already scored 10 goals after just three games.

Town next visit Altrincham on Tuesday night, who have lost all three of their games so far, but Grimsby have slipped up against them in the past so can take nothing for granted. In fact Grimsby have never beaten the Robins in four attempts.
