GRIMSBY rose to third in the table with a well-deserved three points at Eastleigh which lifts the Mariners to within five points of the summit. The game’s only goal was scored in the first half when Amond was played through to score in front of around 500 visiting supporters.

Paul Hurst named an unchanged side for the trip to the South Coast which meant Pearson began the gain on the bench where he was joined by John-Paul Pittman who returned to the team after his recent injury.

Town dominated the match from the off and Monkey had a free header from a corner which was cleared for another corner. Arnold, Jones and Amond troubled the Eastleigh defence all afternoon with their interplay and it was that combination that led to the goal. An earlier Town attack broke down came but the ball came out to Arnold who played it back to Jones to set up Amond for a simple finish past the 'keeper

Eastleigh won a free kick near the corner flag which skimmed off Tait's out onto the top of the crossbar, which was the closest they came to scoring in the first half.

The Mariners dominated the first half and went in at half time with a deserved lead.

Grimsby continued where they left off in the second half, although as they half progressed Eastleigh came into the game more and McKeown had to react quickly to deal with a shot from Reason.

Town had several chances to get the second killer goal but the Mariners were forced to negotiate over five minutes of injury time defending a one goal lead with the hosts throwing everything at them.

But it was too little too late from Eastleigh and the Mariners held on for a priceless three points.
