Game, Set and Matt

IF you think you can predict the outcome of football matches with any accuracy, you are wrong. Last night's game between Grimsby and Swindon looked nailed on to be a low scoring game, and a probable away win after Swindon's recent run and excellent away form generally.

In fact, the match confounded any trend, proving to be a very entertaining encounter in which the lead changed hands three times and the goal-shy Mariners scored three times, eventually running out 3-2 winners with a late strike from Mitch Rose sealing all three points.

Russell Slade made two changes, both up front. Sam Jones and Jamille Matt replaced JJ Hooper and Scott Vernon.

Jamille Matt opened the scoring on ten minutes when he was set up by Jones, slipped past his defender, and coolly slotted the ball past the 'keeper to end the goal drought.

It was a deserved lead but it only lasted 15 minutes. Anderson levelled from Swindon when he was allowed space to shoot from distance and his 25-yards screamer sailed into the top corner. Within a minute disaster struck though as the visitors went ahead. A routine Taylor free kick bounced to McKeown in the box and he inexplicably let the ball through him. It was as bad as it gets from a goalkeeper

Town continued to press in the remainder of the first half and Dembele, Jones and Summerfield all hand chances.

Rose and Jaiyesimi wasted chances early in the second half, but Town finally levelled the game when Rose crossed from the bye-line and Dembele drilled the ball in to make the score 2-2.

McKeown earned his wages to make up for his mistake with a series of saves but the final strike finished the game in style when a Sam Jones shot was parried by the 'keeper but only into the path of Rose who had a tap-in from close range.

It was a well-earned win and good performance which hopefully will boost everyone's confidence going forward.
