GRIMSBY convincingly beat Newport 3-0 at Blundell Park in one of their most convincing performances of the season. Two goals from Jordan Cook and a late own goal were enough to see Town over the line and they could even afford for Wes Thomas to miss a penalty just before the break.

Danny Collins returned to the defence, with new loan signing Kristian Dennis having to settle for a place on the bench.

After a quiet start Town took the lead when an attack led to Cook receiving the ball with his back to goal, turning and drilling a low shot into the corner to give Grimsby the lead.

The goal gave Town confidence and Woolford went close before wing-back Luke Hendrie was brought down just before the break. Thomas took the spot kick and hit a low shot at a saveable height and pace and the keeper guessed the right way and collected the ball with no chance for a follow-up.

Newport had an effort cleared off the line early in the second half, but that was the closest they came to getting anything from the game as Grimsby soon gave themselves daylight when a defensive mistake saw Cook once again presented with a chance in the six-yard box from a Hall-Johnson pass and he made no mistake.

Grimsby started to play with some style and could have extended their lead on several occasions. The third goal came from a superb move and a great flick by substitute Harry Clifton set of Woolford whose superb cross was defected in by Demetriou.

It was a comfortable victory. Newport may have had Tuesday's FA Cup replay at the back of their minds, but Grimsby now seem to have recovered from their January blip and can look forward to four consecutive games against teams below them in the table, starting with Saturday's trip to Yeovil.
