GRIMSBY succumbed to their first defeat of the season in torrential conditions at Bromley. The Mariners had taken a first-half lead thanks to a John McAtee free-kick. But a second-half deluge saw the visitors come from behind, scoring three goals to dampen the Mariners' good start.

Grimsby's task was made all the harder when Michee Efete was sent off for a punch when the score was 2-1.

Ben Fox and Will Bapaga replaced Alex Hunt and Ryan Taylor, with John Mcatee leading the line for Town. Town keeper James McKeown made an early save with his feet to deny George Alexander.

Town almost scored on the break straight after surviving a massive goalmouth scramble in their own box, following which Sousa and Mcatee linked up, with the latter firing a shot low to the keeper's left.

Arthurs has a good chance on the break after Town gave the ball away but hit his shot wide.

Then Town won a free kick in a dangerous wide position and McAtee drilled it in and it squeezed in low in a crowded box at the 'keeper's near post.

Bapaga has a golden chance not long after to make it 2-0, but the keeper stood his ground for the one on one and made the save to deny Town a second.

The deluge started in the second half and Bromley had the right idea of shooting from distance. Their equaliser came from a deflected shot from Cheek which left McKeown stranded. Alabai found the net with a rasping shot from a narrow angle that put the hosts in front.

With conditions at their worst and visibility poor, Efete was shown a straight red for his reaction to being fouled.

John-Lewis came on and Grimsby had a couple of half-chances to draw level, but Whitely made it three with another long-range effort that saw McKeown once more stranded in his goal.

Town started well but Bromley made the most of the conditions in the second half with their three goals from a long way out. Town's sending off was ill-discipline and will cost them a first choice player in the next three games.

Grimsby have a chance to rebound after two difficult away games with a home match on Saturday against bottom side Dover.
