Big Mac is Back!

News From 17th February 2000

As if yesterday's news about the four new board members was not enough, the new board have announced yet another major recruitment in less than 24 hours! They revealed today that former Grimsby Town manager Lawrie McMenemy has agreed to assist the new board in an advisory capacity.

Big Mac has swapped his track suit for a suit in a return to the club he managed three decades ago in a golden era for the Mariners.

Speaking from his Hampshire home today Mr McMenemy said that although he had no plans to return to full-time management he was always willing to help the Mariners in any way he could.

"I've got absolutely no intention of going back into club management. It's not something I could do for seven days a week any more,
"I've had a lot of offers and opportunities, but at my stage of life they're not what I want.
"The board has asked me if I can help in a consultancy sort of way. It's nice to stay in football in some sort of capacity and I'd always be prepared to help Grimsby in any way I can.
"I don't want to stand on anyone's toes. I think there's a good manager there in Alan Buckley who is doing a good job.
"I was lucky enough to be the guest of honour at the Auto Windscreens and I remember saying to Alan Buckley 'well done,' because managers must get sick of hearing about the 'good old days.'
"I'm delighted they're having a good run of results and they're climbing up the table now."

In "Big Mac's" brief period as manager in the early 1970s he transformed the club in a manner without precedent. In the space of a few short months home crowds grew from around 5,000 to over 20,000, with the Mariners winning the fourth division championship in 1971/72, his first season.
Let's hope his return will trigger a similar response!
