Bantams Defeat Town

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 09/08/2000

A bright start by the Mariners in the first 20 minutes eventually ended in a 2-0 defeat for Town tonight in this season's final pre-season friendly at home to Bradford City. The Mariners started brightly with both Paul Groves and Paul Raven going close.

At the other end Dan Petrescu crossed but Dean Windass headed over when he should have done better.

Keeper Danny Coyne was the hero of the night for Town, making 6 or 7 good saves from the Premiership opposition, Before half time Coyne made good saves from Bradford players Blake and Hopkin before the ref blew with the score still at 0-0.

However, it took Bradford just three minutes of the second half to go ahead after a dreadful mistake by David Smith was seized upon by City striker Dean Windass, who went past the otherwise faultless Coyne, before unselfishly passing the ball to Blake who passed the ball into the unguarded net.

Shortly after that Danny Coyne saved Blake's penalty after the referee had blown for a handball inside the box from Paul Raven.

Windass put the result beyond doubt in the 78th minute. Lee Sharpe played a 50 yard pass out of defence to Blake. He fed Petrescu who clipped the ball over to Windass and who headed the ball home to seal Bradford's 2-0 win.

Town's last great hope of a new signing up front before the season ends, Michael Jeffrey on trial from Kilmarnock, impressed in the first half before being replaced at half time by substitute Bradley Allen.
