Question of the Week

Who will go down?

No Bid says Buckley

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 14/08/2000

Alan Buckley today denied that he had offered £100,000 for Birmingham City's Jon Bass. "There was certainly an interest in case someone came in for Butterfield but no bid was made". Bass himself was reported to have said that the deal fell through because of the medical report.

A rumour has been circulating that there is a potential buyer lined up for Danny Butterfield, and that a number of clubs are looking at him.

A Wimbledon scout was also reported in the director's box on Saturday and a source stated that Daryl Clare's name was also mentioned.

Certainly on Saturday's showing, Town's shortcomings, particularly in the goal scoring area, were clear to see with only Bradley Allen and Kevin Donovan receiving any praise, so the news that there may be some transfer activity behind the scenes can only be good news for Town supporters. The downside is that Alan Buckley probably still needs to sell before he can buy with the funds he has available.

Town boss Buckley had been promised around £350K by the board from the money received from Wigan after the sale of Lee Ashcroft. As Jeffrey cost nothing, presumably most of that money still remains available. But whether it is enough to secure the signing(s) Town really need looks unlikely.

The number 10 jersey still lies unclaimed in the team's squad, perhaps I hope a hint of Buckley's future intentions in the transfer market.

The question is, can Town survive in the first division with the team we have? The answer to that from the fans who were at the game on Saturday, was a definite no.

That some of the better players may have to leave in order to secure the services of others, may not please all Town fans. The reality is that although Grimsby have very few balls to juggle with, it looks at this stage (after just one game) the only hope of surviving the long haul to May.
