Question of the Week

Who will go down?

New Striker In Town

By: Richard Lord
Date: 18/01/2001

Grimsby boss Lennie Lawrence is believed to be moving for Leeds' striker Lee Matthews, with the club and player currently discussing a trial move. The 6 foot 2 inch striker is regarded as a possible long-term successor to Steve Livingstone.

With the future of David Nielsen looking more and more unlikely to be at Blundell Park, Lawrence has had to move quickly with only Livingstone and Jeffrey as his only fully fit strikers.

The 22-year old forward will be available on a free transfer, and if his initial trial spell is successful, he could become a Mariner in the near future.

"We are interested in getting him here and he's getting a free transfer, but hasn't been granted yet" commented Lawrence.

"We are actively pursuing it and having a look at him in the reserves. I think a move here would suit him and we are trying to get him sorted out to play for the reserves but it will be possibly next week" continued the Town boss.

The Leeds' forward has played alongside the likes of Alan Smith and Johnathon Woodgate as a former England Under-18 and Under-21 international. Due to injuries his progress has been hampered and currently finds himself as the fifth choice striker at Elland Road.

Matthews' Premiership debut came against Crystal Palace, days after his 19th birthday. Since, he has joined Gillingham on a loan spell but failed to make an impression and now is viewing a potential and permanent move to Grimsby.

It is hoped that the player will feature in the reserve game against Hartlepool later today, and reserve team coach Paul Wilkinson will be aware of the big striker's capability, having worked with the Leeds youth academy.

Although Lawrence will face stiff competition in getting the player to sign for the Mariners, with other clubs apparently aware of his availability.
