After a brilliant performance at the Reebok Stadium against Bolton Wanderers, the fans, the media and Manager Lennie Lawrence were full of praise for the Mariners. A game that brought out the best in the players and Danny Coyne, Zang Enhua and Paul Groves in particular were singled out for praise.

Of the game itself, Boss Lawrence told the Grimsby Telegraph, "A lot of people thought we were just lambs to the slaughter, and we were just going to get rolled over. We were determined that wouldn't happen."

"It was a terrific performance. Whatever the result would have been in the end, they applied themselves, worked hard, and we were definitely the better side in the 1st half. Obviously they put a hell of a lot of pressure on us in the second half, as you would have expected. The only disappointment we've got is that we twice took the lead but didn't win the match."

"But I suppose if you were a neutral you would have looked over the 90 minutes and said a draw was about a fair result, so that is a big step up for us."

"We have only got five or six [away] games left now, and if we perform like that, we won't lose many, and that's a fact."

"It was a very good team performance. Zhang and Grovesy were outstanding again." "Deliveries from our free kicks and corners were excellent. We just need a goal or two more from open play now."

"As for Danny Coyne he is excellent, as good as anybody in this league without a shadow of a doubt for consistency."

Some of the fans who attended the game rated Town's performance as the best they had seen for this season.

The Times commented;

The desire shown by the supporter who has become a local celebrity by trading his copy of the Kama Sutra for a pair of Grimsby Town tickets has filtered through, evidently, to his side's players.

Fresh from beating Burnley at the weekend, Lennie Lawrence's men played the part of passion killers as they twice led Bolton Wanderers in front of the Reebok Stadium's biggest crowd of the season.
