AS WE ENTER the fourth meeting between the two sides, both teams are still unsure where their destiny lies this season. While the Mariners are in the thick of the relegation dogfight, Wolves are still hovering just above the relegation candidates.

Past Meetings

The record attendance at Old Trafford was in fact between these two sides in an FA Cup semi final clash in 1939. Unfortunately for Town, Wolves ran away 5-0 victors to book a place in the FA cup final. The Goals for Wolves came from Dennis Wescott, who scored 4, and Tom Galley. This was Grimsby's second semi final appearance, while Wolves got to both cup finals, losing both.

The last meeting at Blundell Park between the two teams was back in October when the two sides met in the Worthington Cup second round. After being 2-1 down, Town suddenly found themselves 3-2 up in 5 minutes when goals from Jonathan Rowan and Bradley Allen set up a interesting tie at Molineux, but it was all an anti-climax as Town were beaten 2-0.

Player Link

England international TOM GALLEY was instrumental in Wolves FA Cup success and was ever present in their 1938/39 season, before becoming captain in 1940. He was capped only twice for England, but made 183 appearances scoring 41 goals from his wing half position. Galley then moved onto Blundell Park in 1947 and scored twice in 32 league games. He then finished his career at Kidderminster Harriers.

Current Watford boss GRAHAM TAYLOR (top) had a stint as Wolves first-team manager in the early 90’s after his disaster as England coach. Whilst at Town he played left back, and after making his debut in 1963 at home to Newcastle. He went onto being ever present in the 1966/67 season and made 189 league appearances with the likes of Dave Worthington in a strong Town backline. He was then sold to Lincoln in 1968 for £4,000.

Towns football in the community manager GRAHAM RODGER played one game for Wolves as an apprentice in 1984 at home to Ipswich Town, before joining Coventry in 1985, where he made a Cup final appearance at Wembley. He then had a spell at Luton before joining Town in 1992 for £135,000 and then played 146 times for the Mariners, including a large part in Towns 1997/98 Wembley season, before injury forced him to retire.

Influential in Wolves’ fourth division title triumph in the late eighties, was defender STEVE STOUTT who played 94 games for Wolves in a strong backbone which saw them start a rise through the divisions in the 1987/88 season. He then moved to Town in July 1988, but made few appearances due to a knee injury, and was sold by Alan Buckley to Lincoln for £9,000 in 1989.

Dave Beasant Two players have both had loan spells with Wolves, as well as playing for Grimsby. DAVE BEASANT (left) made 6 appearances for Town on loan from Chelsea, and made 4 starts for Wolves in the same 92/93 season. Beasant then moved onto Southampton and is currently keeping goal for Nottingham Forest.

Former Scottish under 21 forward SCOTT McGARVEY had a loan spell with Wolves whilst on the books at Manchester United. However, he was unable to prevent relegation for Wolves that season, while scoring twice in 13 games at Molineux. He joined the Mariners in 1987 and netted seven goals in 50 games. However McGarvey's stay at Blundell Park was short-lived and the Scot was swapped with Tony Cadwell in 1988.
