Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Nielsen To Join Dons

By: Jostein Jensen
Date: 16/03/2001

FORMER Grimsby striker David Nielsen is close to signing a contract with the English first division club Wimbledon, after a week's trial at the South London outfit. Wimbledon have been very impressed by the forward despite the fact that the Dane has been out of action for a month, and not trained.

Nielsen told the Danish web site onside.dk "Their manager, Terry Burton, asked my agent (Poul-Erik Petersen) about how long it had been since I played football, as he meant was I in good shape. It's always strange to hear things like that, but the most important for me is that Wimbledon have told me that they will try to buy me".

The story is confirmed in tomorrow's (Saturday's) edition of the English newspaper the London Evening Standard, who report that the Dons have secured the necessary funds to purchase David Nielsen for a price believed to be around £300,000. Wimbledon have enough money to finance the move as the South London club have just sold former striker Marcus Gayle for a figure reported at around the one million pound mark, to Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers.

FC Copenhagen's Director of Sport, Niels-Christian Holmstrøm told the Danish website that he has not so far heard any concrete from the London club. "One of the conditions of understanding for David to stay in England was that a club would make contact with us, but that hasn't happened so far, at least not during telephone negotiations, so I can't comment on transfer fees or similar" said the Danish director

The news that David Nielsen looks like joining Wimbledon follows earlier reports that Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence has spent 700,000 pounds of the board's money - mainly on loan players wages - including those of the former Danish Under-21 international, who spent 3 months on loan at Blundell Park but departed having failed to agree terms with the Mariners.
