Question of the Week

Who will go down?

From The Chairman

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 16/05/2001

With the dramatic end of the season with Grimsby retaining first division status, the chairman of Grimsby Town FC, Mr Doug Everitt today issued the traditional chairman's message on the success of the season and the plans or hopes for the future.

The Chairman's Message

Another season draws to a close and after a tight and tense finale, we are relieved to say that the Mariners have retained their membership of the First Division.

This campaign has been full of exciting football and nerve-jangling performances and the encounter with Fulham was no exception - everyone was well aware of what was at stake on that particular day. The outcome of the whole season came down to one game, and thankfully, it proved to be a wonderful day all-round.

For Grimsby Town to retain it's First Division status is a fantastic achievement in itself. When you consider the many millions spent spent by the backers at QPR, Tranmere and Huddersfield, and even Crystal Palace andSheffield Wednesday with their vast income levels, for anyone to say that Grimsby Town do not perform well, is an injustice.

I am sure that the majority of our fans really and truly understand the levels of finance within the club, which have always been, still are and and will always be for the foreseeable future, limited. The whole Board and staff will strive to maintain the present level and hopefully a higher level.

Having replaced Alan Buckley with Lennie at the start of the season, my Board and I feel the decision has been justified with the entertaining style of football Lennie has produced and increased public relations of the club.

You can be assured that, after a short break to recharge their batteries, the manager and players will be working hard in preparation for the new campaign, and I trust that we can rely on your support once again. The club's aims can only be achieved with your backing through the turnstiles and then vocally getting behind the team.

Many thanks once again.

Enjoy the summer and we hope to see you back at Blundell Park for the start of the new season.

Up the Mariners !

Doug Everitt
Chairman GTFC
