McDermott Gives His Opinion Of The Wolves Victory

By: Richard Lord
Date: 18/03/2002

GRIMSBY Town captain John McDermott believes that the Mariners' destiny is in their own hands after Town secured a memorable 1-0 win at Wolves. Speaking to the Evening Telegraph Macca said: "It is nice to look at the table and see ourselves out of the bottom three.

"Our future is in our hands now - if we can get the points that we need there will be no looking over our shoulders." The 33-year old revealed how the dressing room atmosphere resembled that of the victory at the Hawthorns late last season.

"It feels like the result when we went to West Brom last year. The togetherness that was there after that result is the same and hopefully we can do exactly what we did last year."

The club captain explained that it wasn't just a lucky weekend win and gave the thinking behind the approach to the game: "We haven't come away from there having snatched and grabbed it. We have looked like a promotion-pushing team.

"The midfield was absolutely brilliant, Grovesy and Andy Todd were outstanding and Danny Coyne - who didn't have much to do during the whole game - was called upon and made a couple of great saves, and that is why he is probably the best in this league.

"We had to start the game right. We couldn't let them come at us and dictate the pace of the game. If that had been the case we would have been struggling.

"In the past that has happened. We have played well for 20-odd minutes and passed the ball around, but they have always seemed to get that goal. We knew if we could go in at half-time 0-0 we would have a great chance.

"We were unlucky not to go in maybe one or 2-0 up, we had a couple of chances and we would have thoroughly deserved it, and we knew coming out for the second half that we had to turn the screw on them."

The GTFC appearance record holder now believes that Town, second in the form league table, should be avoided if other teams want to pick up points.

Macca concluded: "We are a good team at the moment and a lot of teams do not want to be playing us. We have got to win our home games now and we knew we had to get a result away from home.

"Coming to Wolves on the form we were producing, there was no reason why we couldn't, and we have."
