Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Jevons Joins Tigers

By: Paul Holmes
Date: 04/09/2002

OUT of favour Grimsby Town striker Phil Jevons has sensationally joined local rivals Hull City in a season long loan.

Jevons was in fact due to play for Town reserves against Hull's second string this evening but will now link up with his new colleagues tomorrow morning.

Jevons is clearly out of favour with the management at Blundell Park with Town now down to just 3 strikers: Steven Kabba, Jonny Rowan and Chris Thompson with Robert Taylor and Steve Livingstone injured whilst Paul Robinson's loan spell is set to end before the next game. However Youth team striker Darren Mansaram was likely to have pushed for a place on the bench for the Chesterfield game whether Jevons was available or not.

In the summer Jevons was placed on the transfer list along with Danny Coyne as the club tried to cut costs. Jevons pleaded to stay and insisted that he was a long way away from been the clubs top earner.

Both Jevons and Coyne were removed from the transfer list before the start of the season, no interest had been shown in Jevons though. The-ex Everton man has struggled to even earn a place on the bench this year and rumours of disagreements with Paul Groves and his management team are rife.

Jevons joined Town from Everton last summer with payment of £250,000 dependant on appearances etc. Everton last month delayed the payments required from Town, a move which many thought would free Jevons play - it had little effect with the striker only managing appearances from the bench against Wimbledon, Derby and Millwall.

Upon arriving at Blundell Park, Jevons looked to be the next 20 goal-a-season striker for Town bagging 8 goals before injury and loss of form hit before the New Year. His most memorable contribution was 'that goal' at Anfield though and for that alone he will go down in Town history.

It was revealed at the weekend on BBC Radio Humberside that the players agent had tried to negotiate a loan deal to Hull which seemed to have fell through.

Whilst Jevons and a few other players at the club will benefit from loan spells the club simply can't afford to loan players out with the current squad size. Under current rules clubs are unable to call back players on season long loans, a reason why West Ham were not keen to loan out Grant McCann to the Mariners. Both Livvo and Taylor are injury prone and when they return to fitness it would be unwise to depend on them, Kabba is only on-loan for three-months which leaves the very inexperienced trio of Darren Mansaram, Chris Thompson and Jonny Rowan.

Hull boss Jan Molby makes Jevons his 5th loan signing of the season behind Stuart Green (Newcastle), Simon Johnson (Leeds), Carl Regan (Barnsley) and Owen Morrison (Sheffield Wednesday).
