Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Santos Could Stay!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 24/04/2003

GEORGES Santos may leave Grimsby Town this summer saying he will keep his options open. Although Paul Groves has said he wants to keep him, no offer has been made yet. But now Town know where they will be next season, negotiations with players can start.

The Grimsby Telegraph also report that John McDermott could be a shock departure from Blundell Park with one of the Mariners' first division rivals leading the bidding and Tony Gallimore is reported to be a target of another club.

With eleven players approaching the end of their current contracts they will have to accept pay cuts of more than 50 per cent if they want to stay.

It is almost certain that Terry Cooke will be on his way out of Blundell Park and Stevie Croudson may not get an offer.

Stacy Coldicott and Steve Chettle are expected to be made an offer but Steve Livingstone is amongst the others who may miss out.

"I haven't had an offer yet from Grimsby. I think they want me to stay," said Santos. "We will see what happens after the Brighton game. I'm looking to play football. Grimsby gave me a chance to do that this year and I am happy here. They gave me a hand and I tried to give them a hand back."

"It's a shame we went down and it is the first time that it has happened to me in five years of football in England. Playing in the second division isn't too bad, but it's a very, very hard division to come straight back out of. We would need to be stronger than this year."

"I have to listen to everything that is coming in. We'll have to see with Grimsby what they offer me. If they want me to stay I think it's professional to wait for them. I'm open to offers. I have no idea who has been watching me. My agent has been quiet with me. I just want to finish my season with Grimsby and see what happens."

"Grimsby are the club that are giving me my wages now and I will do my best for them. There is no rush. Before pre-season there are eight weeks and that is plenty of time to make a decision. We will see and it will be nice to have a break and think about it."

Although the Grimsby Telegraph commented that Town fans will be dismayed at the news that some of their top stars could leave, it is obvious that one or two of them have not shone this season due probably to their age.
