Bury Preview

FOLLOWING the Mariners' 1-1 draw with Boston in the Lincolnshire derby in the week, we’re back at Blundell Park again when Town will be looking to secure their first three points of the new season.

The Opposition

Overview
Bury have begun the new campaign in decent form as they look to improve on last season's 12th place finish. Graham Barrow is the man with the task of guiding Bury closer to the play-offs, where they got to in the 2002/03 season under ex-manager Andy Preece. Preece was sacked, somewhat harshly in many people’s eyes, back in December. Barrow has previously managed Rochdale, Wigan and Chester. Since he took over at the turn of the year he has done reasonably well - keeping Bury clear of the relegation zone last year and adding some decent players to his squad over the summer - culminating in a decent start with a 3-1 win over Yeovil at the weekend and a 2-2 draw with much fancied Bristol Rovers on Tuesday evening.

Their Squad
Graham Barrow has made five new signings at Gigg Lane over the summer. Perhaps the most important from their point of view is Town villain Dave Challinor (left) who, as all Town fans know, broke Martin Pringle’s leg when playing for Town a few seasons back, with a reckless challenge. He will line up in defence along with ex Wednesday player Brian Barry Murphy who scored a fantastic 25 yard top corner goal on Tuesday to secure a point for the Shakers. Dwayne Mattis is another new player who scored on Tuesday. The midfielder signed on a free from Huddersfield in the summer after 6 years at the McAlpine stadium. Ex Boston striker Graeme Jones and Jon Newby are two strikers who joined Bury over the summer with Newby - who hit nearly 20 goals in previous two year stay at Gig Lane - expected to score the goals to help Bury have a successful season.

Key Player
David Flitcroft (left) has been a key player for Bury since his move from Macclesfield in February. Flitcroft has had successful spells in the lower divisions with Rochdale and Chester before he made a move to Macclesfield last summer. However, his time at Moss Rose was not all together successful, so he made a move to Gigg Lane where he has been a regular in the centre of midfield, putting in some impressive performances.

Head to Head

Amazingly, after 59 meetings between Town and Bury, there is nothing to separate the two sides! Both clubs have won 22 games each, conceded 85 goals - and scored 85 goals! This surely means that something has to give tomorrow. Town haven’t beaten Bury since 1988 - losing every game since then except the last one in 1999 when it was a dull 0-0 draw.

Last Meeting

The last time the two sides met was in a dull league encounter in Division One at the end of the 1998/99 season. Town were sailing high half way through the season under Alan Buckley - they were in 6th place in January, but fell away at the end of the season when goals became hard to come by. Bury meanwhile, were at the foot of the division and were eventually relegated. By April, when the two sides met at Blundell Park - Steve Redmond had been given the Bury job following the departure of Neil Warnock.

Connections

  • The most prominent recent connection between the two sides is Nicky Daws (left) who had two loan spells with the Mariners last season. He was drafted into Blundell Park from Rotherham in September when Town were short of players in midfield. He then returned in January when Alan Pouton departed for Gillingham, but his loan was not extended beyond March by new boss Nicky Law. In total he made 17 appearances for the Mariners.
  • For Bury, he made a total of 356 appearances after signing from Altricham in 1992 for a fee of £10,000. He endured the highs and lows at Gigg Lane - including a spell in the First Division when Neil Warnock was the Shakers manager.

  • Town have been dealt with the news that Tony Crane is out for the season with knee cartilage damage. Crane has missed the first two games of the season through suspension anyway, so will not need to be directly replaced in the starting eleven - though it does leave Town short in central defence for the coming season.
  • There are conflicting reports over the Dean Gordon situation. Reports from Sky Sports say he is training with Sunderland. However, Town claim he arrived at BP this morning to have talks with Russell Slade. If he does sign, he could be in the squad for the Bury game.
  • Meanwhile, Ronnie Bull could return to the lineup after a thigh strain kept him out of the Boston game. Although he may not necessarily displace John McDermott from the starting lineup.
  • Rob Jones is definitely out with a knee injury, meaning that Greg Young will start in defence, having played 80 minutes on Tuesday.
  • Michael Reddy could start the game, but would not necessarily last 90 minutes. Therefore, Slade may favour the option of using him on the bench once more - from where he had a great impact on Tuesday night, scoring after a minute of coming on.
  • New signing Greg Smith will go straight into the squad following his free transfer move this week. The ex Notts County keeper will act as cover for number one Glyn Garner.
  • Colin Woodthorpe is suspended for the Shakers after his red card on Tuesday night. Under new FA rules, players are now suspended the game immediately after the one they are sent off in.
  • At the moment, there appear to be no more injury worries for Graham Barrow, meaning that he will select the same side that grabbed a point at Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night.
