Williams To Leave?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 18/05/2005

TOWN's 'keeper, a certain Mr Williams, is playing it cool and only thinking over a new contract after being offered one. Russell Slade seems unperturbed, with a new experienced keeper pencilled in to replace him.

Grimsby manager Russell Slade told Mariners Net, "we definitely need to have two goalkeepers. We have been speaking to a 'keeper and we have Rob Murray, who will probably be our third keeper - he did really well last season".

Although Slade doesn't explicitly say whether Williams is to be the first or second choice between the sticks, the Welshman's delay in signing probably indicates the latter.

With the chase to re-sign players now well underway, the Mariners have now made offers to the bulk of last season's squad.

"With the window closing and not opening until January, it is important that you have a decent number of players," said Slade. "We are looking to have around 20 players. We have made offers to the majority of our players and we will be looking to add to those."

One thing is for sure. Slade wants there to be some competition to see who wears the jersey after risking all last season without a reasonable keeper to call on if Williams was injured.
