Slade Looking at Palmer - Palmer Signs!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 25/05/2005

IT was revealed today that Russell Slade held talks with former trialist Jermaine Palmer in the hope of bringing him to the club. The 18-year-old Stoke striker had impressed Slade with his performance in the reserves game in their 2-0 Pontin's Cup defeat away to Manchester United.

The Grimsby Telegraph, who released the news said that Palmer is looking for first team football after being released earlier this month.

Slade said; "Jermaine came earlier in the season and did well for the reserves. Then he went back to Stoke, but we got him back to see him again the other week and he had come on again. He was highly regarded at the Stoke academy and is still young."

"That's a key thing for me because I want to build a team here. We stabilised the club a bit last season and you have to move on and build for the future. It's my responsibility to do that and with the signings of youngsters with potential like Jermaine and Gary Cohen, I think we are heading in the right direction."

Palmer (pictured) has now signed a 12 month deal with the Mariners!

Slade said after signing him; "He's quite highly regarded, still learning his trade. He's more of a target type player. He's reasonably quick without being lightening."

"He came earlier in the season for us to have a look at him and impressed us then. He then came back towards the end of the season and he had improved again. I'm sure there is more to come from him."
