Scunny Sign Town Target

SCUNTHORPE United boss Brian Laws completed his third new signing of the summer yesterday when he stole a march on rivals Grimsby Town to capture the signature of ex-Stockport captain Jim Goodwin.

The Grimsby Telegraph reports that The 23-year-old Irishman agreed a two-year deal at Glanford Park but later admitted he had been talking to Mariners boss Russell Slade earlier in the week about a move to Blundell Park.

Ultimately, the former Celtic man admitted the draw of staying in League One after Stockport's relegation was too much of a temptation.

Goodwin told Scunthorpe's official website: "I had other opportunities but after Stockport were relegated I wanted to stay in League One."

"I was delighted to get the phone call from Brian Laws asking me to join the club and, knowing Brian's experience, I knew it was the right move for me."

"I had other options but I was advised that to work with Brian Laws was the right move. It wasn't a difficult decision because my heart was set on coming here. I've come to play in midfield, but the manager knows I will play anywhere."

Irish international Goodwin started his career at Celtic before moving to Stockport in 2002, and he went on to make more than 100 appearances for the Edgeley Park side, captaining them at the end of last season.

But boss Chris Turner knew he couldn't afford to hang on to the fans' favourite following relegation. He said: "I couldn't offer him a contract which matched those he's received from other clubs."
