Peterborough Preview

PETERBOROUGH United are the next threat the Mariners face as they travel to London Road looking to break the club record for successive away wins, surpassing that of Bill Shankly's 1952 Town side.

After securing their fourth successive away win this season (and their fifth in total, including the tail end of last season), the Mariners make a trip to promotion hopefuls Peterborough United. Similar to the Mariners, the Posh have experienced mixed fortunes on their home turf so far this campaign with a win, draw and a loss in their opening three encounters at London Road. But having been relegated from League One last season, making several new signings and appointing a new manager, hopes are high for a good shot at an immediate return.

Opposition Overview

The end of an era came about during the summer at Peterborough, with Chairman Barry Fry ending his nine year reign as the Posh manager and appointing former Chester boss Mark Wright (left)as his replacement. Wright, who had an indifferent time with Oxford United in 2001, moved down to the Conference in 2002 to work his way to the top again, taking over Chester City. After two seasons with the Cheshire outfit, Wright guided the Blues to the Conference Championship in 2004, before quickly departing Chester before the start of last season. After a year out of the game, he jumped at the chance of managing Peterborough, who for the past ten years or so, have yo-yoed between the league's two bottom divisions.

Their Squad

Wright took over Peterborough during the summer with a decent looking squad already at his disposal. Calum Wilcock netted 14 goals last season, attracting the interest of other league clubs. Meanwhile Chris Plummer has played with QPR at Championship level, with Sagi Burton and Peter Kennedy also having plenty of league experience under their belts. To add to this, Wright raided the transfer market, capturing Lincoln City midfielder Peter Gain who knows all about this division, having been involved in three play off competitions. Former Cambridge and Leicester forward Trevor Benjamin was drafted in, bringing some much needed steel and experience in attack. Benjamin of course scored against the Mariners last season at Blundell Park while playing for Northampton Town. Former Chester captain Paul Carden was re-united with his former manager after completing a free transfer, while the Posh have James Quinn to call upon. The striker of course played in the victorious Northern Ireland side against England on Wednesday night. The 31 year old striker turned down a move to the Mariners in the summer after being released by Sheffield Wednesday.

Key Player

RICHARD LOGAN - After a disappointing season last year, Logan is back in favour under new manager Mark Wright and has already got amongst the goals, netting two already this campaign. The former Ipswich forward is always a threat at this level with his power and technique on the ball.

The Mariners could be without former Tranmere winger Andy Parkinson for the trip to London Road. The Mariners number eleven is suffering from periostitis (shin splints) and so Russell Slade may decide not to risk causing further injury. Therefore this could mean a start for Tom Newey on the left hand side of midfield. Alternatively, Gary Croft could be deployed there with Simon Ramsden plugging the hole at left back. New signing Tommy Taylor could therefore be included in the squad to provide another option down the left hand side. Elsewhere, Russell Slade has no new injury problems to contend with and is likely to stick with the side that won at Chester on Tuesday. Ciaran Toner could also be added to the squad having now got a couple of reserves games under his belt after being sidelined with a broken finger.	Â§ Winger David Farrell will hope to return after tearing a hamstring in the 1-1 draw with Stockport a few weeks ago. If Mark Wright decides to recall the 33-year old he could well replace Dean Holden. The Mariners have in fact enjoyed more success when facing the Posh at London Road with 4 wins from the last 10 encounters, while at Blundell Park we've managed only two from the last 10.

Prediction

These are happy times for the Mariners away from home. The run surely has to end somewhere? By their own admission, Peterborough haven't being playing to their potential this season and have already lost at home. Town to sneak it, again.
