Slade Swoops for Yeo

RUSSELL Slade has revealed that he is hoping to persuade former Lincoln striker Simon Yeo to make a sensational return to Lincolnshire. Yeo moved to New Zealand to play with new club NZ Knights in their inaugural season, but is unhappy Down Under and is looking to return home.

The 22-year-old is well known to Town fans having scored a brilliant hat-trick against the Mariners in last season's 4-2 defeat at Blundell Park.

Yeo is understood to have been close to re-signing for Lincoln, but Slade is hoping to beat the Imps to the 5'10" forward's signature. With Grimsby this season doing better than Lincoln, Yeo may be tempted to sign for a more successful side who might offer the added bonus of League One football next season.

The former Army man has scored 10 goals in just 11 starts in the A-League for Knights, and also scored 43 goals in 87 games for the Imps. The possibility of Yeo and Reddy up front for Town is a mouthwatering prospect.

Meanwhile Slade has revealed that there has been a good deal of interest from "bigger" clubs in Grimsby's better players.

"I've had enquiries from several Premiership and Championship sides about six of my players," Slade told Mariners Net.

With January's transfer window looming, the Town boss will be keen to keep all of his squad together until at least the end of the season.

"They're all under contract and I shall be doing all that I can to keep hold of them," Slade responded.

  • Darlington boss Dave Hodgson has hit out at his own club officials after Saturday's game was needlessly called off.

The Quakers were unable to find eight people willing and able to put covers on the pitch on Friday night and as a result lost around £40K.

An angry Hodgson told the Northern Echo: "It's just sheer negligence. The necessary steps weren't taken and as a result we have lost out on a lot of revenue."

  • Town starlet Andy Taylor scored all seven goals as Grimsby's youth team thrashed Mansfield 7-1 at the weekend.
