League Two Round-Up

THERE were several twists and turns at both ends of the table as the pressure really got to some of the teams at the top. But yet again Carlisle sent out another clear message to the rest of the league after their convincing 5-0 victory away at Darlington. And that's where we begin.

It was expected to be a tough trip for Carlisle as they made a eighty mile trip towards Darlington but again the pundits and football fans who saw this as a potential banana skin were wrong as the Cumbrians ran out 5-0 winners away from home. At first it looked like a low scoring game until Darlo handed Kevin Gray the lead on the stroke of half time and from there on in Carlisle finished brilliantly and won by five clear goals, none of which came from top scorer Karl Hawley.

There may have been no upset there but at the Causeway Stadium there was a huge dent in Wycombe's promotion hopes as a Tony Bedeau goal sealed the points for Torquay and handed the Gulls arguably the biggest upset of the day.

Though the biggest upset of the day may be closely run by fellow strugglers Rushden as they picked up a huge three points at home to Leyton Orient thanks to a vital Drewe Boroughton header after seven minutes.

In another shock in League Two occurred when in-form team Mansfield beat Promotion hopefuls Northampton 1-0 at Field Mill after top scorer and highly-rated striker Richie Barker (who once nearly joined Town) netted to secure a mid-table position for Mansfield only a few months after hitting rock bottom.

In arguably the game of the day, and the hugely anticipated Lincolnshire derby between Boston and Lincoln, it finished 2-1 to give the pilgrims a big boost and huge bragging rights until the next meeting. It was Lawrie Dudfield who was the toast of the town after a ninety fourth minute goal secured the points for United. The day was made even worse for City after star striker Simon Yeo was carried off with a suspected broken ankle which means he is definitely OUT of next weeks clash with the Mariners.

In a six pointer at the Bottom, Macclesfield were comfortably beaten 2-0 away to Stockport in a game which will take the gloss of a good week for Macclesfield who reached an agreement earlier in the week regarding their money problems.

In another game which involved strugglers Chester City and play-off hopefuls Cheltenham Town, a goal from Cheltenham's midfielder Wilson was enough to see them through.

Two other play-off dreamers, Wrexham and Bristol Rovers were in action against mid table strugglers Rochdale and Shrewsbury with both games finishing 1-0. Though only Wrexham picked up all the points after Rovers slipped up which will be a big disappointment for them?

We conclude our round up with two draws between Peterborough and Barnet as well as Notts County and Oxford. The first was a more exciting affair as it finished 2-2 but the latter was a boring and dull 0-0 where neither team looked like they wanted the points.
