Town Face Railwaymen

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 21/06/2006

GRIMSBY have been drawn at home to Crewe in the First Round of the Carling Cup. The League One outfit, who were relegated from the Championship last season, are still managed by Dario Gradi, who had been at the Cheshire club over twenty years.

The two clubs faced each other at the same stage of the competition in 1990-1991, when the Railwaymen won by away goals. First and second round matches these days are just over one leg and Town will fancy their chances having been drawn at home.

Local rivals Scunthorpe and Hull, who unlike Town were both seeded, are also drawn at home with the Iron facing neighbours Lincoln City at Glanford Park. League newcomers Accrington Stanley face Nottingham Forest at home.

The full draw is as follows:

Northern section:

Chesterfield v Wolves
Stoke v Darlington
Port Vale v Preston
Burnley v Hartlepool
Sheffield Wednesday v Wrexham
Bury v Sunderland
Hull v Tranmere
Blackpool v Barnsley
Huddersfield v Mansfield
Carlisle v Bradford
Rotherham v Oldham
Scunthorpe v Lincoln
Accrington v Nottingham Forest
Grimsby v Crewe
Leeds v Chester
Doncaster v Rochdale
Stockport v Derby
Leicester v Macclesfield

Southern section:

Cardiff v Barnet
Milton Keynes Dons v Colchester
Swindon v Brentford
Crystal Palace v Notts County
Hereford v Coventry
Swansea v Wycombe
Peterborough v Ipswich
Bournemouth v Southend
Brighton v Boston
Cheltenham v Bristol City
Millwall v Gillingham
Southampton v Yeovil
Birmingham v Shrewsbury
Plymouth v Walsall
Bristol Rovers v Luton
QPR v Northampton
Torquay v Norwich
Leyton Orient v West Brom

Ties to be played in the week beginning 21 August.
