Preview: Wycombe v Grimsby

ALAN Buckley takes charge of his first Grimsby Town league game for over 6 years as The Mariners make the difficult trip to Wycombe. With the bottom two teams in League 2 playing each other, Town also have the added pressure of keeping themselves clear of the relegation zone.

After relegation along with The Mariners in 2004, Wycombe have found getting out of this division just as tough. They spent the majority of the 2004/05 in mid-table, sacking Tony Adams in the November and replacing him with John Gorman (left), and despite making a late bid for the play-offs they finished tenth. Last season they made a very strong start, staying unbeaten until almost Christmas and were top for the majority of the first half of the season. Off field issues including the death of both midfielder Mark Philo in a car crash and Gorman’s wife from cancer overshadowed the club and The Chairboys started faltering in the New Year. Gorman took compassionate leave and an alarming drop in form, including six defeats in a row, saw them struggle to even salvage a play-off spot; they did eventually secure sixth spot but narrowly lost to Cheltenham in the play-off semis.
Wycombe currently lie in 3rd place in League 2, five points off top spot and two ahead of the play-offs. Their home form is strong with only one defeat so far (which was to away specialists Lincoln and accounted for three of the five goals conceded at The Causeway Stadium) and their success has been built around the second tightest defence in the division; they are currently on a run of one defeat in eight league and cup games.
Jermaine Easter and Tommy Mooney have become a strong and complementary partnership with 20 goals between them this season; Easter is top scorer with 12. In midfield is ex-Fulham and Barnsley winger Kevin Betsy (left) and Stefan Oakes who signed from Notts County 18 months ago. Wycombe also have four Premiership players on loan and are likely to include two in their starting line-up, Fulham goalkeeper Ricardo Batista and Reading defender Scott Golbourne.
Who else but Tommy Mooney (left)? A name to strike fear in the majority of Mariners fans. Easter may be the top scorer, but Mooney, with nine goals in his last 10 games against The Mariners, has become infamous in recent years against Town. Mooney has eight goals so far this season, but has failed to find the net in his last six games; a run that is waiting to be broken.

Despite not facing each other until the 1997/98 season, Wycombe have quickly become a major bogey team for The Mariners. Town’s only victory against them came at the start of the 2003/04 season and they have never won at The Causeway Stadium. The last time Town visited The Causeway Stadium was on the corresponding weekend last season, when both teams were in the automatic promotion places and Town’s superb unbeaten away run finally came to an end.
