Beat the Bookies: Week 22

By: Rob Sedgwick

LAST weekend was not a good time for most Mariners' fans, and Beat the Bookies was as short of luck as Town were at Sincil Bank, especially with the late Accrington equaliser at Macclesfield!

Grimsby have a must win game at home on Saturday against the division's least in form team, Torquay United. The Devon side have not won for ages in the league, although they did have a good win away at Leyton Orient in the FA Cup last week. The league's fixture computer has not been kind to the Gulls either, throwing up Friday away at the start of Xmas weekend. With two away games coming up, Grimsby will be looking to pick up all three points and Bet 365.com have made Town odds-on, but only just at 4/5. Torquay are available at 3/1. I'd go for Town without hesitation but generally avoid odds-on bets, so will look elsewhere this week.

Elsewhere in League Two Boston are at home to league leaders Walsall. The relegation-threatened Pilgrims have improved considerably in recent weeks but have a stern test at home in the shape of the Saddlers. However York Street is not an easy place to visit and Boston are a fair priced (2/1) to cause an upset.

The big match in League Two is probably Keith Alexander's new side taking on his old one when Lincoln head to Peterborough. City had a good result last week against Town, and the win could kick start their season. With their players and fans being doubly up for the game against Posh, it being a Xmas and a local derby, I'd expect Lincoln to have a chance of taking all three points. A City win is available at 2/1.

Finally, Hull travel to Elland Road buoyed by a superb result against Cardiff at the weekend. Leeds' recent form is poor, whereas City have just sacked their manager and caretaker Phil Brown is enjoying a honeymoon period. What's more Hull are 11/5 to beat Leeds.

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Lincoln to beat Peterborough (2/1).
  • 2. Hull to beat Leeds (11/5).
