Town Equal Club Record

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/08/2007

GRIMSBY'S 1-1 draw with Bury on Saturday equalled a club record of five consecutive draws set in 1965.

Should the Mariners draw with Macclesfield at Blundell Park on Saturday then it will be the first time in their 129 year history that Grimsby have drawn six games on the spin.

Ironically Town went 24 games without a draw last season between November and April, something they have not done since 1933 when they went an incredible 32 games without a draw. Last season ended with two draws against Lincoln and Shrewsbury, before the Mariners went on to draw the first three matches of the new season, all of them by the scoreline of 1-1.

The run in the 1964-1965 season was as follows:

06-Feb-65Mansfieldh1-1
13-Feb-65Lutona1-1
20-Feb-65Walsallh2-2
27-Feb-65Watforda1-1
06-Mar-65Readingh1-1

The run was ended by a 2-0 defeat at home to Bristol City, but the Mariners went on to draw the following two games as well!

Besides the 24-game run without a draw Town also set or equalled two other records last season:

  • Town went on the worst in their history after six defeats on the trot without a single goal in return.
  • Town recorded the biggest away win for 50 years when they defeated local rivals Boston 6-0, which coincidentally also ended the above run.
