Not in Newport squad today - rumours of a fallout with Flynn, and linked to Northampton.

*no idea if correct or not, it’s on Twitter.

That said, I’m not normally one for ex players returning - but given our need of a striker, his proven record, knows the club and area and personnel - then if there was any way he could be enticed back - I’d be in favour.

There are 23 other teams in L2 in the queue ahead of us - and maybe some in L1.

Not a chance he returns here.

24 total in L2 minus the club he already plays for = 23.

I’d offer him a player coach job specialising with the strikers.

That all depends on how much we offer and how long a contract.

The usual GTFC 10 bob a week for six months won't do it

Great idea. I’d love to get him but fear he’ll have other suitors in the EFL like others have said. I hope we approach him at least. He’s just what we need and don’t have - a natural goal scorer.

Maybe Podge could put in a good word about us to himself and make the move happen

He well might if the money was right and the length of contract, he's already left once because we refused to reward him sufficiently. At this point in his career he's got to go where the money is.

He started 23 League 2 games last season - the idea that every other League 2 team wants him sounds fanciful. I'd give a bollock to see him back.

No need for you to come down here to pick him up, I'm driving past Newport on the way home tomorrow, I'll gladly pick him up and bring him home to Grimsby.Just ask the new owners to write a cheque out, payable to Newport County fc. . 😉

How bizarre. Offer him a job coaching the players in competition for his place?

BTW, a good striker but what is this assumption that he would make a decent coach.

You'd have thought Podge still be capable of scoring around 20 goals a season, if he played most of the games. Problem (assuming he was willing to come), is whether he'd fit into Hurst's plans? I always got the impression he'd do best as part of a front two, so if we're potentially playing with a three, it might not be a good fit. He joined us with an average scoring record from his previous club after being stuck out wide, I seem to recall?

And scoring very few goals because you are playing out wide in a 3 is fine but I think a lot of fans would deem less than 20 goals as a failure.

Many of those clamouring for Amond would probably criticise Hurst for signing a former player if it didn't work out.

If LJL and Taylor had played more than 15 minutes between them during the whole of pre-season then this whole striker debate wouldn't be half as bad.

Podge was a great player for us but he's 33 now. Don't know how he's been playing for the last 18 months but not many 33 year olds can command 2 year deals

I’m not sure McAtee will be that sort of player… I think he’ll be a willing runner/ creative player playing behind the front men/man.

If Padraig is not in Newports plans he would be a good loan signing initially to see how it pans out for all parties.
If he's still got it - his contract with Newport expires at the end of the season, offer him a decent contract & we could get him for nothing.
If he's lost it - we have lost x months salary.

But he knows Hurst and a few others connected with the club so will know that things are different.

I do get your point and I imagine we will still struggle to convince many to even consider us for a while yet.

I love all this Amond talk.
But surely it isn't just me that is really skeptical of the idea?

Would rather have the great memories we had before with him.

If it was someone else with his stats for the last 2 years, not 1 person would want him IMO
33Years old
19/20 - 8 goals in 33 apps
20/21 - 6 goals in 44 apps

For context, John-lewis scored 4 in 20 in the worst team in the league, Amond has been playing in a Newport team that finished 5th

Or any other club who has a talented striker available.

It also depends on if he has had contacts with any agents who have offered their clients, potentially from around the world.

Could end up with an ex-Bulgarian international or a Spanish up and coming who will rip every club in the league a new one.

Options are endless

Now that you mention it I did spot a bloke who looked suspiciously like Hristo Stoichkov at Millfields the other day. Granted he was working behind the bar, I don’t think Stoichkov speaks English with a strong Scouse accent and the image I have of him in my head is probably at least 25 years old, but I think this might just be happening…

Am I the only one thinking John Akinde might be exactly what we need up top? Apparently Southend are close to signing him, but they need to offload Akinola first. Would be pretty pleased if we managed to hijack that deal.

He’s playing a level above the one he was at with us. Those records are not that dissimilar to what he was doing at Morecambe before he joined us in 2015. There are plenty of examples of players who had modest scoring records in League Two who were prolific in the National League - Connell and Amond the obvious ones, Matt Green too.

Should we or shouldn’t we? It’s impossible to answer without knowing what else is on the table. If we’ve got a number of younger, better looking options on the horizon then adding another 30+ year old striker to our ranks seems daft.

If however, we’ve missed out on key targets and are scratching around for alternatives to little avail, then arguably it makes sense.

Regardless, it has to be weighed up on merit. Romanticism is rarely a sound reason for signing a player.

Can't make my mind up on this one.

I thought Amond was phenomenal when here and not just for his goalscoring exploits.  He's the best centre forward I've seen at the club since Gary Jones in terms of leading the line.  He was the absolute perfect example that you don't need to be 6'3 and 13st of muscle to be a centre-forward.  If it went up to him, it stuck.  But even better was that it stuck and then he brought others into play.  He told his colleagues not only where to go and to play off him but also where he wanted the ball.  I love LJL but he reacts to the play, he'll chase it wherever it goes.  Amond made the runs and then the ball was sent to him.  That's the difference between the two.

That said, this was over 5 years ago.  The few times I've seen Amond in the cup games (albeit against very good opposition) he's not looked quite the same player.  Again, it's comparing Man City to Welling.  But he just looks a bit different, no doubt with another 200 games his legs since leaving us.

Would he come back and be a 25-30 a season striker?  I doubt it.  But would he lead our line well?  Without a shout.
I've seen the Clee, Rotherham and Boston games and the absolute stand out is that we've no-one who is capable of leading the line.  Essel and Adlard are far, far too inexperienced to do so and it would be cruel to expect it of them.  The only other fit player is McAtee and he most definitely needs to be in that attacking midfield role where he can make things happen, in that role he'll be a huge player for us.

Part of me thinks the need is greater for someone who can chase things into the corners and be a physical nuisance, I suppose a bit like LJL but then I look at the likes of McAtee and Sousa in support, plus the more advanced fullbacks such as Efete and Revan bombing on, which makes me think it is more about someone just to link it all together.  Someone with that cuteness to make a five-yard run that takes two players out the picture or has that little know-how to wait an extra few seconds to time their run so they pick up the scraps of play.

intercourse it, I'd take him in a heartbeat.  I don't care if he's 33 and both of our other centre forwards are around that age.  It's Padraig Amond!

At the level of ability he had when he left us he got 14 goals a season in lg2 the next year, then the same again ish for the next 2 years in league 2. 8 the following season. That has fallen to 6 in a season  with about the same number of games. He isn't the same player he was.

Am I the only one thinking John Akinde might be exactly what we need up top? Apparently Southend are close to signing him, but they need to offload Akinola first. Would be pretty pleased if we managed to hijack that deal.

John Akinde Pen - other than his time at Lincoln hes liked to stay in the South from what I can tell so location maybe an issue with that one. But definitely would be a good addition to anyone at this level.

With Amond he strikes me as the sort of player where age wouldn't affect his game 'to much'. Isn't someone i remember ever doing a lot of running in behind or working the channels. Get the ball in the area and he'll score goals, just has the instinct for it.

Assuming Grant, Scannell, Wright, McAtee and Sousa all stay fit we should have no problem creating chances. Having someone to tuck in those chances is really important and the difficult bit. Personally i think Lenny will thrive with good service in this league.

As much as i liked Podge  , he is on his way down due to age , And will only get slower  , We need a younger model of him and that wont come cheap.  Thing is if we dont spend to get the right players in you may as well just have gone with what we had and just tread water  fenty style. , The idea is to get better players and win games , thats what it is all about . You dont buy a football team to just own it, you have to invest and go forward , I know the new owners have spent money and i am 100% behing them , but dont spoil the cake for a tin of cream , Remember buy cheap buy twice or in our case every year
Another point is podge is well respected here i would hate it for him to come here and end up like many before with his reputation shot by the fans because he is not  the same podge , and we all know that will happen

Yeah true, Lincoln is just that extra bit closer to London than Grimsby/Cleethorpes. Wouldn't surprise me if he was located somewhere between London and Lincoln when he played there. I'd imagine he was on a very good wage too when he was there, with location having been a bargaining chip for him in that respect.

Paul Groves?  John Oster?  Before my time but Matt Tees?

I get what you mean though, generally I hate the idea of going back for former players, but taking his one-year previous with us I'd still take a player of his quality and pedigree to boost our attack.  I'd also like someone more mobile too.

Nobody on here knows what Hurst and Doig think about Podge. They might agree with some on here that he isn't the player he was, and they are not that keen to get him back. I think they have better options that they are chasing, but it is the same old problem of getting them to drop down or relocate.

No idea but I’d love to see someone up there with nous and craft to compliment McAtee’s energy or the shop’s strength. Clever strikers at our level are few and far between.

Signed on a temporary deal right before the 14/15 season. Made his debut in that televised 0-0 draw at Bristol Rovers and made a couple more nondescript performances before leaving and going on to sign for Havant & Waterlooville.

He retired not long after, so I suspect he already knew he was on his way out of the game. At the time I think we had a few injuries up front, and so it was only ever a short-term arrangement to tide both parties over I think.

I reckon something’s going on. El Noche has been quiet for a while, which means discussions are ongoing but it’s just too early for him to be dropping vague hints like “4 legs good, 2 legs even better”*

* I’m sure that fits whoever is lined up 😁

I thought he said something like pen and paper ready a couple of weeks ago. Update please Fil.

Calm down everyone. Take a deep breath and realise this is just a run out

On the plus side - Number 9 incoming and about to get the fountain pen and blotting paper out of the top drawer

Must have lost his pen….

Amond to Exeter on loan

I would like to thank the two idiots giving me a Red Cross for a factual update.

Don’t worry this thread will no doubt start again when he’s missing from an Exeter match day squad 🙇‍♀️

It's a season-long loan.

Nothing to say he will even start a game. Exeter still have a good frontline, so he could only be used as backup, if at all.

Most season-long loans have a recall clause in January for those who like to speculate on Amond mid-season too.

Didn’t miss out at all. Exeter quite possibly enquired about him and were didn't. In Podges position given a choice, Exeter or Grimsby, then I would have taken Exeter.

Exeter as a place is great, I'd happily live on the outskirts if I had to. Loads to do within a 30 minute drive
