Judging by the weather outside, I think they are flying out to Tenerife to train somewhere a bit cooler. Seriously though, this should help put to bed all that drivel someone posted on here and Twitter about not seeing any evidence that our budget is improved.

I’d imagine anyone gormless or moronic enough to ask such a pointless question or challenge the ownership is either exactly that, stupid or still clinging to the saggy scrotum skin of the former despot that called himself the owner/leader…

Ther's always moaners, I would hazard a guess this wasn't booked last week and even the new owners aren't mystic meg for weather updates.
A week in the hot sun abroad, believe it or nor is different to the UK weather, if you get really bored google why.
Lets hope they come back fitter than ever and fully up for the games in the League. I would guess it's not goinf to be a cakewalk.

Gawd, is that lot still there? Not far off a couple of decades since I was last in Playa but I have memories of watching the cockroaches running up and down the steps around there earlier in the evening when we went out a bit early one night!

Interestingly I believe that to enter Tenerife you must have had your Covid jabs. Bearing in mind many footballers (ill-advisability in my humble opinion) haven’t had them, it would suggest that all GTFC players have. I wonder whether it is now part of the playing contract. #UTM

A Covid test should be good enough, so hopefully Grimsby Town footballers have the (basic human) right to choose what is put into their body.

Maybe it's partly to expand GTFC fan base?
I'm all for playing abroad as it can sometimes bring in new fans of the clubs, just like we have in Scandinavia ( Which I would love us to go to on a pre-season next year ).
That or Hurst wants a sun tan.

So is Hurst staying in England, by his phone, to bring in the 6/7 new players needed, or bringing back 6/7 new Spanish players??
How many out of contract players are still sunseeking in Tenerife, just waiting for Hurst to drop in and make their day??
Warm training to make up for short holidays time after promotion?

I've just come back from Madrid recently and yes you needed proof of both vaccinations. This was in May though and not sure things have changed. Likewise whilst on the flight over on Iberia Express there and back it was mandatory to wear a face mask on the plane.

You only need a negative PCR or antigen test to enter Spain (and the Canaries) https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/spain/entry-requirements

I would imagine that the game against N. Ferriby was always going to be one for our youths - coming so soon after the Lincoln game.

"Just back" from Tenerife may take on a different meaning after the training sessions there.
Town fans on hols - just nipping to the shop, love, and 3 hours later returning in their Town tops after spying and reporting back here on Spanish Senor A,B, C and D trialists on show ??
If new signings have a sun tan in their interview????
The "Tenerife project" swayed me ????
Seriously though, is it better to have a break for some warm weather training, than play here on rock hard pitches, and risk more injuries and niggles?

My view as well eg yes it's a good idea to fly out somewhere and change the environment. Having said that surprised a bit that clubs like Grimsby can afford it. Maybe a new idea by the board possibly splashing the cash a bit more in areas that will help improve on field result's ?.

There’s all sorts of benefits of a training camp. Not least the ability to bond, our first opponents have just had one so the affordability is a bit of a myth too. Paul Hurst’s Shrewsbury team were in Portugal before their near promotion season so I guess it’s something he’s asked for out of the approximate million quid we got for promotion.

I think whatever gives you a edge will help .Looking at it from another level take Real Madrid for instance. I know they have the finances but they are next level. Players there usually train twice a day eg morning and afternoon sessions with their own flats inside the training complex so they can rest and recuperate between am and pm. Money talks .

I think the quick turnaround has something to do with it too, a bit of a reward for those we've retained as they be only had 3-4 weeks off. I wonder how it costs compared to Mottram Hall where we went last summer and if we will have a game out there? If we have a game out there, it probably poses a different test for our players but most importantly, it takes the players out of their comfort zone, away from their partners and forces everyone to get to know one another.

I think James it's a good idea and a step up in professionalism money permitted. I know from other pre season bonding trips things don't always go to plan. Roy Keane for instance back in 2009 took his Ipswich squad to military training with the parachute regiment. By all accounts the army pushed them too hard and Roy Keane could tell the players were struggling and in his words the view on the players faces expressed it all "if you think we're getting promoted on this your in trouble".

Since when did flying to Tenerife get you three points on a Saturday
Change of environment and breaking the monotony of living in England. From hearing interviews from some of the top players who are use to this many like and appreciate it as well. They tend to come back more refreshed and eager to do well. Hence a happy player is a dangerous one as thats when he tends to perform at his best.

A trip to Tenerife to train a few weeks after getting back from your summer hols in Corfu wouldn't really make much of a difference, IMO. I think the winter sun breaks which the big clubs can often squeeze in are probably a different matter.

May be so but team bonding, altitude training and clearly some investment in pre season and preparation for the new season is something we’re not used to…

Agreed completely, it's not just about the physical aspect of training at all. In any job in any organisation, if the powers that be spice tuings up every now and again in a way that shows they value you, the likelihood is it will be beneficial. A change of scenery can help sometimes but I think this is about the culture building work that is going on. All organisations will develop a culture over time, the difference is whether or not you control the growth and direction of that culture whenever and wherever you can, or whether it happens organically.

I’ve listened to enough Undr The Cosh to know exactly what ‘warm weather training in Tenerife’ usually means
Is not come across ‘Undr the Cosh’ before you mentioned so thought I’d check it out, doing a lot of driving in the week I’ve always got some sort of podcast on the go. Have listened to the first 3 episodes and have to see it’s brilliant! The banter between the hosts and guests is great and often really funny, but the insight into the going’s on at lower league football clubs is really interesting! Have to say Jon Parkin is a funny guy too!

I think though team bonding in another country is beneficial . Less distractions eg family, children (I know there is phones but it's not the same as being next to people). Granted as you have said it's a short period of time only 4 days which Grimsby are going out for( would of been better longer) and for other bigger clubs pre season trips abroad tend to be longer eg 7 or even more days.

I think one of the problems for the short period is the lack of time available this year, our season ending on the 5th June and the new one starting 30th July.

Yes forgot about it being world cup year and the season being changed as a result . Having said that other clubs are still going abroad for longer than Grimsby eg Luton and Sunderland are going to Slovenia and Portugal for 7 and 8 days respectively. Will be interesting to see if Grimsby do pre season trips abroad now or is this just a one off?. I know traditionally Grimsby have done pre season trips in the United Kingdom.

Has anyone thought that the ecomonics of going there might be favourable compared to going in the uk?
Also, this might have been booked some time ago based upon the statistical likelihood of good weather was also much higher than the weather in the UK over the time planned.
Just saying, there might have been an element of planning around this one.

If the Club do look at this as an annual thing given the change in professional mindset, it would be great if in future years they are able to plan an itinerary that includes friendlies and is advertised to fans.
I can see that this year the whole uncertainty of league, logistics once promotion was achieved and then timeframe to make arrangements would have made it very difficult but I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one who would seriously consider taking in a cheeky holiday to Spain, Portugal etc which has the added bonus of a Town game or two in the future!

Reminds me of something I've always wanted to do from a similar angle which is going to watch the world cup abroad.

I'm hopeful of seeing some games in Qatar this year. Will be there with work for a few months and although we've had nothing mentioned about availability of tickets we're silently praying there'll be something on offer to go and watch a game or two. Probably unlikely but will keep hoping!

Hope you get to go. I adore the football world cup and have done since a small boy.

Exactly this, as a Llanelli Scarlets fan we get the double edged sword of league fixtures in 5 different countries and despite the general lack of travelling fans being a nefative, the long weekends away in Venice etc whilst taking in a game are fantastic. In future pre-seasons you'd have to imagine some places who possibly aren't in the most popular destinations list (eg Slovenia as mentioned previously!) would be happy to assist in some small way - I get that we aren't premier league, but english league clubs still have some pull/aura about them in many places around the world. 7 days over there, a couple of friendlies, maybe a foreign club could host us and the local tourist board might have some small ways to make it more cost effective for the club in return for being able to market a holiday deal to the clubs mailing list etc. I can't imagine JS hasn't already had thoughts about it though, he's far more intelligent than the likes of me.

I was alluding to that when I said that I wondered how much it cost compared to a week at Mottram Hall last season. I wouldn't be surprised if there's not much in it.
