The state of this country is going further and further downhill,

What do you think would be the best option,

IF WE HAD THE CHOICE,

Join the USA as the 51st state,

Stay in the euro zone,

Be independent and free to make our own laws and make our own trade agreements,

What are your views and why ?

I wouldn't join the Yanks if you paid me.

Technically speaking we're not in the EuroZone as this phrase refers to members of the EU who use the Euro currency - which rules us out.

We are independent: we do make our own laws - in a big building by the River Thames called the Palace of Westminster. We are a soverign state just like Germany, France, Spain et al. The EU has no bearing on the rights of soverign nations to establish their own legislation: On many affairs EU member states have the right to veto, a right which the UK has often exercised in the past.

I had a discussion the other day with my neighbour who said that if we left the EU it would end the problem of illegal immigrants. I had to point out that they were ILLEGAL immigrants, contrary to English Law, British government policy and EU legislation. Taking the UK out of the EU would not end it because they were ILLEGAL immigrants, not immigrants who were legally here thanks to the EU.

He wasn't happy.

Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

Wrong. 70% of our laws are made in Brussels by an unelected, unaccountable commission which cannot be overruled by the EU 'parliament'.

That paragraph encapsulates for me the lack of understanding your average man in the street has of the state of play. Trying to decide who's fault it is that people don't have that knowledge is far more difficult to pin down. Is it that "the powers that be" shroud things in mystery creating a vacuum so that people are deliberately kept in the dark or is it as I suspect the press/T.V and other media release as much "information" as their vested interests allow......

Some people say we have been the "51st. state" of the U.S. of A since they bailed us out during and after W.W.2. To the Americans we are merely a strategic advantage. American foreign policy of the last 200 years has always sought to keep problems as far away from their shores as possible.  Our whole nuclear deterrent is apparently based on what they allow us to have and what they are prepared to help us fund because we cannot pick up the tab by ourselves.  The whole Iraq business showed the folly and danger of unconditional support for an increasingly deranged ally.  The Americans used us to deflect some of the criticism of their actions away from themselves. We walked into the trap with the same enthusiasm of turkeys voting for Christmas. Whether it was out of a desire to show we were still powerful or whether there were behind the scenes pressures brought to bear is a moot point but our stance over Iraq has got us some "independence" because most of the rest of the world hate us.

Really? 70% How amazing. And here was I thinking the European Commission merely created legislature for the European Parliament to vote on but apparently they have the power to implement their will, willy-nilly. And that commissioners are unelected although they are appointed by the soverign governments of member states and can be changed at any time.

And given that the EU has no jurisdiction whatsoever over police and criminal law in any member state then 70% sounds a very high figure to me. Oh, and of course, each country still has a veto in matters of taxation, economy and defence.

Are you sure you didn't mean 7%?

70% was the figure the UKIP leader said are made in Brussels

Having listened and read lots of views on the subject here is my choice,

We should remain in the euro union,

I do believe you should be either in 100% or out 100%,

If we had changed the pound for the euro years ago the pound or euro in your pocket would be worth a lot more than it is today.

By the sound of it most of you agree we are better off in the union,

BUT do you think we should go the whole hog and change our pound or stay as we are. ?

I feel we are either "in" or we are "out". As it looks like we intend to stay in the EU I would vote for the Euro myself. My only concern would be that as we switched over to the Euro, shopkeepers would include a sneaky price rise that they did with that new fangled decimal stuff.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'
