The England Euro 2000 Debate
David Peasgood this week finds Fred and Bert have just been deported from Belgium following the Romania game, for illegal use of the zimmer frame, and are still dumbfounded that we lost.
Hear their views and YOU decide in our latest 'fishy' poll.
The England Euro 2000 Debate
FRED:
It's all Keegan's fault. Twice we had the lead and twice we threw the game with poor tactics.
BERT:
You cant blame Keegan. It's the players who aren't good enough.
FRED:
These are the players who play at the top of Europe and who earn £40,000 a week or more. Of course they're good enough. They just get played out of position or they are limited to specific jobs by the coach and not allowed to play outside of that.
BERT:
Rubbish. What about Ince last night. he's an old man. Then we took Owen off, the one man who might have stole a late goal with his pace, and we left Shearer on whose pace is long gone. All Heskey did was fall over when he came on and Neville should never have been at left back. Wise was nowhere and the goalie..well!
FRED:
I agree on Neville. We had that young lad Barry in the team because he was left sided and never even tied him. At the end of the day though we lost because we went out there for a draw and let them come at us. We fluked a lead at half time, still didn't learn and went for a second half holding tactic and that failed too. We deserved to lose.
BERT:
But where does it all end eh? I'm so angry that we can't do better than this.
FRED:
We're running out of ideas. Keegan is probably going to stay cos there's no obvious option. The FA never take the peoples choice so Venables won't be back and Peter Taylor is still too inexperienced. Maybe we should have a foreign coach?
BERT:
I wouldn't want a foreign coach. How about a UK side. Could we get a good team together with the likes of Giggsy and Keane to add to what we have?
FRED:
It's a thought but the public would hate it. Maybe we should scrap all the current squad and play the under 21's for the next 2 years. Let them grow together into a genuine force.
BERT:
Or maybe we just stop trying to be so damned clever in these tournaments. Perhaps a bit of the old blood and thunder, get stuck in, long ball over the top play might suit us better than trying to play continental stuff that's unnatural to us.
FRED:
I don't know Bert. Still. You wonder if some of the players earn so much, that they aren't too bothered by it all. Anyway, at least we finished above Germany.
BERT:
Big deal. I reckon we'd have beaten Italy on Saturday an' all.
Now for the vote...
