Town went through to the second round of the Worthington Cup, drawing 1-1 on the night with Carlisle United at Brunton Park, to win 3-1 on aggregate. Peter Handyside started for the Mariners and played the first 68 minutes of the game before Lennie Lawrence substituted him for Bloomer.

Town dominated most of the game and missed a stack of chances in both halves. After 10 minutes an ummarked Steve Livingstone headed over from six yards, following a corner by Stacey Coldicott. Allen went close a few minutes later forcing the Carlisle keeper to make a good save

Ian Stevens scored for Carlisle against the run of play after 17 minutes, lashing the ball home from short range after a good cross from Dobie.

Just before half time Town drew level when Allen latched on to a ball into the box from Livingstone, skipped past a defender, and slotted home for 10 yards out.

The second half was dominated by Town, but yet again they hadn't brought their shooting boots with them, and the whole game emphasised just how critical Lennie Lawrence's search for a new striker is.
