Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Daryl's The Man?

"If he can get a goal he could find himself in a situation where he was a back number and out on loan and nowhere a few months ago, to being the one," said Manager Lennie Lawrence speaking about Daryl Clare whose performance against Huddersfield on Tuesday earned him Man of The Match rating.

Clare will retain his place in the lineup against Wolves on Saturday and Lawrence is looking to him or one of his other goal-shy forwards to start producing he told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"He was quite effective on Tuesday and I think that role suits him." "He doesn't have to think too much about it and Kevin Donovan is clever enough to dovetail in with him."

In assessing Clare's chances and future at Blundell Park Lawrence added: "To hold the position he's got to weigh-in with a goal before somebody else gets a go. He's certainly not going on loan and, if he drops back out of the scene, I might accept an offer for him before the deadline."

"But he might be the man. It might be him. If he does it and scores, then he'll stay there. The thing I can't afford to mess about with are strikers in goalscoring form. Whoever it is, or whoever it becomes, stays there. We need a front player to come up with three or four goals before the end."

In other words, Lennie is looking for a shining star amongst the current squad and Daryl Clare who has been on the fringes for so long will no doubt heed his words and be fighting hard on Saturday.

This is a great opportunity for him brought about by the lack of anyone in the squad being able to find the net on a regular basis which is the one reason that Grimsby are lying at the bottom reaches of the table. If the loan spells at other clubs have helped him develop into a more effective striker, that might show on Saturday and bring some relief to the club and the fans.

Lennie is also calling for the fans to get behind the players in this tough tie with David Jones's Wolves side and to urge the team on. It would be good to see that especially if the fans have something to shout about.
