Donovan Contract Delay

By: Richard Lord
Date: 11/03/2001

A disappointed Lennie Lawrence spoke of his frustration over the contract situation with Kevin Donovan. The Town boss believes the versatile midfielder will wait until the end of the season before making any decision, which has in turn had a knock-on effect on progress in talks with other players.

Lawrence told the Grimsby Evening Telegraph: "I wouldn't be surprised if he left it until the end of the season. It's gone on too long and we have made him our offer. I don't think it's a question of negotiating figures any more. They boy's conducted himself impeccably without an agent."

The 29-year old and the club started negotiations back in January, and the former Luton manager detects an air of unhappiness in the Halifax-born winger. "I can't speak for him, but I think he's become a little bit cheesed off with how long it's taken and I don't blame him for that."

Despite the uncertainty over Donovan's future at the club, there has been encouraging news elsewhere that both Paul Groves and John McDermott are close to putting pen to paper on new deals next week. Peter Handyside, Wayne Burnett and Stacy Coldicott - all three key figures in the team this season - will be next in line to be offered new contracts.
