Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Buckley: Town "spoiled"

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 10/04/2001

ALAN BUCKLEY delivered another broadside at Grimsby Town today claiming the club was spoiled during both of his spells at Blundell Park. Buckley led Grimsby to two successive promotions after inheriting a squad of only seven professionals, and in his second spell took the Mariners to Wembley twice.

Speaking to Radio Lincolnshire, Buckley said "We were very well established in the first division and we ran before we could walk and then I got headhunted by West Brom.

"When I came back to Grimsby the expectancy got too high again and it spoiled them. They went to Wembley and got promoted playing brilliant football and they were spoiled." said Buckley, arrogantly implying that he was somehow too good for the Mariners.

Billo's View: Mr Buckley is correct in his remarks about his success at Grimsby. He was hailed as one of, if not the, greatest manager of all time. However, his last two seasons at Blundell Park in division one were not as successful as his seasons in division two which led to the speculation about his ability to perform at a higher level.

Now at Lincoln City, recently signing a new 3 year contract, he seems quite at home in the lower divisions and having the occasional crack at his old team but most Grimsby fans would still wish him well. Who could forget Wembley!
