Where will Grimsby be next season?

Danny Coyne On The West Brom Game

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/08/2001

DANNY COYNE on the penalty save: "I had just been speaking to Grovesie about it. I thought with the way he was shaping up that he might put it that way. It's nice to keep the ball out of the net, especially when there was a penalty involved."

Coyne thought the Mariners performance merited three points, although conceded a large slice of luck had gone Town's way. "I thought we did well today. It was a team performance, everybody gave everything. Everybody's run their legs into the ground so we've worked hard and I thought we deserved it."

Explaining what happened during the handling incident, in which many West Brom fans thought the former Tranmere keeper should have been sent off, Coyne said: "I came out to the ball, tackled the lad with my feet because I was outside the box, and then my momentum just carried me forward. I was disorientated and unfortunately put my hand on the ball, but the ref saw exactly what happened, and all credit to him he made the right decision.

"....The ref got it right...."

"A lot of refs probably would have crumbled under the pressure from the crowd and everything. From my point of view I thought the ref did brilliantly, obviously Gary Megson is not going to see it like that, but if I'd done it deliberately I'd have held my hands up and said it but it didn't happen like that and the ref got it right."

On this week's decision by Welsh boss Mark Hughes not to include the Prestatyn-born shot stopper in the national squad: "I'm just playing my games here. Whatever happens will happen, but I'm just keeping my head down and working hard."
