Town on TV Again - Willems Suspension Boost

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/09/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN's match with Wolves at Blundell Park has been chosen by ITV as a pay-per-view game to air on its new football channel which is in its inaugural season.

The fixture was originally scheduled for Sat 8th December, but has been brought forward to the preceding Friday evening (7.45pm KO).

The Wolves game will be the third time in almost as many weeks that the Mariners will be aired on live TV, with the home clash against Birmingham City on Friday 26th October and the trip to Turf Moor on 23rd November to take on Burnley already pencilled in for TV viewers at home or in pubs.

The home match with Rotherham has already been moved forward to Friday 5th October (7.45), in order to avoid colliding with the following Saturday's England v Greece match, but is not to be shown on TV.

Although the new kick-off times bring in a welcome additional source of revenue to the club, the rescheduled fixtures make travelling to the game for the paying punter a more difficult process, particularly by public transport, and have caused some controversy amongst regular supporters.

Updated Fixture List

The club have learnt that Menno Willems (left), who was sent off against Portsmouth on Bank Holiday Monday, will not as feared be suspended for Saturday's big clash with Coventry at Highfield Road. The midfielder's one match suspension will instead take place against Sheff Utd in the second round of the Worthington Cup at Blundell Park a week tomorrow (Tuesday).
