Jevons Facing Race Against Time

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 25/09/2001

PHIL JEVONS is facing a race against time to be fit for tonight's match against Gillingham. It is rated 50/50 whether the former Everton striker, who suffered a groin strain against Nottingham Forest ten days ago, will be fit enough to take part in the game.

Midfielder Alan Pouton, who has been suffering from a similar injury to his groin, is more likely to return to the team, after taking part in training yesterday, although his replacement Wayne Burnett was praised by Lennie Lawrence after the 3-3 draw with Stockport. The only other decision which the Grimsby manager faces is which of loan pair David Beharall and Marlon Broomes should partner skipper Paul Groves in central defence.

Broomes made his league debut against Palace in last week's 5-0 thrashing at Selhurst Park, and was unsurprisingly dropped by Lawrence in favour of Beharall for last weekend's clash with Stockport, where Town let in three goals. "The most polite I can be is to say the defending left a little bit to be desired" said the Grimsby boss after the Stockport game. "We're a curious contradiction: we've had five clean-sheets but we've let in eleven goals in the last four games".

Former Mansfield winger Michael Boulding, who made an impressive first appearance for the Mariners as a substitute against Stockport, is expected to retain his position on the bench.

Grimsby Town (from) Coyne, McDermott, Gallimore, Broomes, Groves, Butterfield, Burnett, Willems, Campbell, Jeffrey, Rowan, D Smith, Croudson, Allen, Beharall, Boulding, Jevons, Pouton.
