Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Board - Resigned to Div 2

By: Graham Howes
Date: 29/12/2001

IN MY OPINION the decisions made in recent events by the "Brains of Britain" Town board constitute a fact of resignation that Grimsby Town football club will not be and never will be a First Division club

I am not saying signing Broomes or keeping Lennie was the answer. However these two decisions have sent out the wrong signals and show a cowardly board has no fight to keep Division One status. Confidence in the club has plummeted after the Broomes' fiasco. The players' attitude sunk to new depths and the fans raised, and rightly so, the negative ambition the decision showed.

We have now seen the Board sink to effectively a Sunday League standard of management. The sacking of Lennie to me is not the issue. If they want a scapegoat for their mismanagement, that is a cause of concern, but not what is bothering me. In a time of crisis we need experience to guide the club. However Ramsden & Co. seem to think differently and have gone mad and appointed a Green Mr Paul Groves. Congratulations Board for your brains, god you are so dangerous with that IQ.

When you analyse the decision you realise performance was not a factor for this move but financial. Paul Groves will cost peanuts than a experienced manager. He will be a lapdog and do everything headmaster Ramsden will want done. So do not be surprised to see players on decent wages transferred on cost cutting moves. Now Groves has 3 jobs and to my knowledge no one has really been a success as player-manager. So God knows how a player/manager/captain is going to succeed. I also fear tactically we are heading straight into a Micky Lyons Mark 2 saga with these poison challis ideologies of Mr Ramsden.

All I can say is God help us now.

GTFC Board - We must by Concerned Mariner

We all know how much the problems inside and outside our club's boardroom are casusing!! What we must do is get rid of the lot of them. None of the current lot and not those who were in charge previously. Their petty bickering and blocking of ideas by other parties are in danger of sending GTFC into football's history!!

Also, I'm ot sure if anyone else will do any better than LL (won't we now have to pay up his contract!!).

Having supported the club for 15 years (10 with a season ticket, I'm getting more and more worried that the best is definatley behind us).
