Neilson Released By Mariners

By: Peter Forrester
Date: 19/02/2002

EX-FULHAM man Alan Neilson was today released by the Mariners. The German-born player was brought in to the set up in October on an end to the season long contract to provide cover for the injured John McDermott, but has now fallen foul of manager Paul Groves' plans.

The right back came highly rated having played for some top clubs such as Newcastle during his career but failed to live up to expectations at Blundell Park. The player started 2 cup games and 8 league games for the Mariners but did not have the best of records. Neilson started the Manchester City and Watford games in which both ended in heavy defeats for the Mariners. When he was finally involved in a winning side (3-0 against Birmingham) he was injured and was out for a month. However due to lack of players he soon claimed his place back when he returned from injury.

But with the return of captain John McDermott, Alan Neilson has been told to look for a new club.

In an exclusive to the official site Paul Groves said "I spoke to the player last week, and we decided that as he wasn't involved here, it would be best for him to leave at this stage and therefore give himself a good opportunity to get fixed up with another club, before the end of season rush of available players."

Hopefully Neilsons high reputation will lead to him gaining a new club soon.
