John Cockerill Loses His Case Against GTFC

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 10/07/2002

GRIMSBY Town director John Fenty claimed ex-assistant manager John Cockerill "let himself down" by leaving the club and he vigorously defended chairman Peter Furneaux who, he claimed, had "only ever acted properly" in his presence.

The Grimsby Telegraph who reported the hearing of the trbunal gave this account: "Fenty told the tribunal: "John was in a position of management and, to be fair, he let himself down. "He chose to leave the club. The chairman asked him many times to reconsider his decision. He left the opportunity to him to come back to us."

"We declared that we were in the boardroom all morning. We did not receive a call and we really did hope to receive one." Fenty denied that Furneaux was aggressive towards Cockerill.

"John was cool, calm and collected. He was in a managerial position and we respected that. He was very decisive about where he was coming from. It definitely wasn't heat of the moment." added Fenty.

"He repeated several times he was leaving. He said 'No, I have made my mind up. Once I have made my mind up, I have made my mind up'," said Fenty.

As reported yesterday, the tribunal ruled that Cockerill was not sacked but left of his own accord"
