Clive's Positive Vibes!

By: Richard Lord
Date: 17/01/2003

Former Grimsby striker Clive Mendonca has backed the Mariners to stay up this season. The 1990's cult hero believes Town's form at Blundell Park will play a vital role in the battle against relegation.

Mendonca, who scored 66 goals during his time at Grimsby, revealed he still keeps an eye on the Mariners' fortunes: "I look out for their results every week, I've got great affection for Grimsby.

"I think a lot of players always look out for the teams who they played for, especially if they've got great affection for them.

"I think they'll stay up every season because it's usually the home form that keeps them up.

"I didn't think many teams liked playing at Grimsby. I hope they stay up because it's a great little club."

Ironically Mendonca's best goalscoring campaign for Grimsby was in the season the club were relegated to the Second Division back in 1997.

Mendonca was sold to Charlton for £700,000, where he netted 28 times the following season, which included a hat-trick in the Addicks' Play-Off final win against Sunderland.

A hip injury forced the prolific marksman to retire early from the game.
