Pay Cuts At Blundell Park!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 31/03/2003

GRIMSBY Town's players who are out-of-contract will have to take a big pay cut if they want to stay at Blundell Park. This decision affects eleven players including McDermott, Gallimore, Livingstone, Coldicott and Santos.

Santos is the only one whose salary is in line with the current wage cap at Blundell Park and Paul Groves said he would be looking to secure the nucleus of his current playing staff over the coming weeks.

He told the Grimsby Telegraph, "We have existing players that we want to open talks with and that's going to be a main priority."

"The reality is that some of those players will have to take a cut. But that's not just something that has happened at Grimsby Town, that's happened across the board in football. It's a difficult time in football and everyone is looking to trim their costs and wage budgets because there isn't the money that was coming into football 12 months ago. A lot of clubs rely on gate receipts and commercial money."

"Clubs are beginning to rely more heavily on directors putting money in out of their own pockets. There's a limit of what people will pay. I think football has changed and those changes have brought about a big drop in players' salaries."

Terry Cooke, Steve Chettle, Chris Thompson, Iain Ward, Chris Bolder are also at the end of their contracts but, with none being a major earner, they are all expected to be offered a new deal.
