Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

What's Going On?

AFTER our relegation to the second division, Paul Groves is beginning to cut the club's costs. But should promising young players be sacrificed to keep injury prone old timers like Steve Livingstone at the club?

Although we all expected Terry Cooke to leave, Groves's decision not to renew the contracts of Steve Croudson and Chris Thompson came as a huge surprise. Neither has made much of an impact this season, one through injury and the other through Groves' decision to play one up front, but I feel that it would have been cost effective to keep both players at the club.

Steve Croudson was the second most experienced goalkeeper at the club and (from the couple of times I've seen Hughes and the one occasion I saw Fraser play) the second best as well.

Chris Thompson proved himself against Stoke City back in February but wasn't given a real chance after that! Now it looks as though the old donkey Steve Livingstone is to be given a new contract instead. This in its self is ridiculous, as Livvo, who took part (including subs appearances) in 32 matches last season and scored only three. That's a goal every 10.6 matches for those who are interested, whereas Thompson managed the one goal in eight appearances (many of these appearances were in the last few minutes of matches). That equates to a goal in every eight matches.

Players like Thompson and Croudson are the future of our club and should be retained. Unlike Messrs Gallimore, Coldicott and Livingstone, these players have their best years ahead of them and would easily be good enough for the second division.

Unless these sacrifices have been made to allow us to sign new players or Georges Santos, Groves, or the board for that matter, have made a big mistake.

Ed: Grimsby Town's retained list is expected to be announced later today.
