The Rights or Wrongs of Wilko

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 31/05/2003

THIS Week at Blundell Park the Board dropped another "so called" bombshell as they decided in the present financial climate that they had to sack reserve team coach Paul Wilkinson. A lot of people, as usual, have slated the club for the dismissal - as can be clearly seen on the Fishy's MB.

Why can't some fans put things in perspective before jumping on the band wagon and moaning about it? In the end the thing that matters is the financial stability of the club, not whether we should keep a employee or not.

In 20 years of watching the Mariners the post of reserve team manager has been like Grimsby Town in all - a bit hit and miss. Some of our previous managers have rather had a Youth Team coach, with the assistant manager taking charge of the Reserves, and we the supporters haven't picked this up until now. In recent years we have had the "luxury" of having both an assistant manager (Graham Rodger), as well as a Reserve Team Coach.

Which would you rather have: too many employees on the payroll resulting in the Club financially struggling to pay the wages, or the Club to restructure the management system as they are doing this summer in order so that they can save money?

In both spells at Blundell Park Alan Buckley never had a reserve team manager - he relied on his assistants (the late Arthur Mann and John Cockerill) to do this job as he probably thought that there was no need for this position to be filled, and then we most likely had the money to fund one if he wanted one when he was here.

Now the clamour is starting we've gone back to the olden days of not having someone in charge of the Reserves. To be quite honest the Board knew what they were doing as next season I can see the Club not having a reserve side, and where would Wilko fit in then being paid and having no responsibilities?

Would you all start moaning about him leeching off the Club and not earning his money like you always say about some of the players? So let's be realistic about what happened today because the reaction at the moment is a "knee-jerk" one. By the time the season starts it will have been forgotten by 90% of the supporters and not be seen through rose tinted glasses. Once again a moaning faction of the Blundell Park supporters have used the Wilko dismissal to slag the Club off without thinking about this matter properly.
