Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Town Head for the Sun!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/07/2003

VETERAN defender John McDermott (calf), David Soames (foot) and Stacy Coldicott (leg) will all miss this week's trip to Ibiza for two friendlies with local sides through injury. Town fly out to the Spanish island on Sunday with a party of 25 set for the sun.

Graham Rodger told Mariners Net: "None of the three players are fit enough to play, so we've given the places to other players who will feature at some stage."

New signing Des Hamilton, who put pen to paper on a contract with Grimsby last night, jets off to Ibiza on his first day at work, along with fellow newcomers Marcel Cas, Iain Anderson and Tony Crane.

Town will train early in the morning or late at night (the matches kick off at 9pm) to avoid the hottest part of the day, and the players have been advised to drink up to 18 pints of water a day to deal with fluid loss whilst on the island, which is in the middle of its hottest spell in thirty years.

"We've had to adjust the schedule to deal with the heat. There is no way we could train in the heat of the day over there," Paul Groves told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"Footballers are well educated these days and they know they have to take fluids on board but obviously it is going to be something we will monitor closely."

The Town party travelling to Ibiza are as follows:

Staff: Paul Groves, Graham Rodger, Paul Mitchell, Mick Bielby

Players: Andy Pettinger, Marcel Cas, Iain Anderson, Simon Ford, Tony Crane, Alan Pouton, Iain Ward, Darren Barnard, Stuart Campbell, Des Hamilton, Michael Boulding, Chris Bolder, Phil Jevons, Jonny Rowan, Kirk Wheeler, Ashley Hildrith, Greg Young, Graham Hockless, Darren Mansaram, Wes Parker, Giovanni Carchedi
