Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Groves: Not Giving Up

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/07/2003

PAUL Groves held last-ditch talks with Clive Platt on Saturday but, despite the Mariners offering more cash than the debt-ridden Magpies, the 25-year-old looks set on a move to Meadow Lane.

The Grimsby Telegraph reports that Town agreed personal terms on a three-year-deal with the forward but his insistence on living in the Midlands appears to have scuppered any chance of a move to the East Coast.

But Groves has pledged to maintain his push for Platt from the Mediterranean. "We will not give up. We are in constant contact and we are monitoring the situation. We'll see what happens and what develops but we are definitely still interested. We still want him."

"He has gone to Notts County to train but they're in administration and there is no guarantee they can sign anybody. We are moving on and looking at other options. We have to protect ourselves and we have to continue looking to bring in the best possible player that we can."

Groves had made enquiries for several strikers in the past few weeks but has been knocked back because of the club's location and the wages on offer at Blundell Park.

The move for Aiden Davison looks to be over as talks broke down last week.

Gallimore

Tony Gallimore looks to be joining Peter Handyside at the Mariners' second division rivals Barnsley.

The Grimsby Telegraph reports that new Tykes boss Gudjon Thordarson has talked to Gally over the weekend and he now training with the Barnsley squad.
